The University of Latvia in Riga has successfully hosted the integration course "Getting to Know Latvia", aimed at promoting the inclusion of third-country nationals into Latvian society. The project was organized by the University of Latvia Culture Centre in cooperation with the NGO “Sadarbības platforma”.

The course participants included students from India, Azerbaijan, Tunisia, Canada, China, Taiwan, Albania, Sri Lanka, and Turkey, currently studying at the University of Latvia. Participants had the opportunity to attend six informative lectures and engage in three practical activities, offering a deeper understanding of Latvian culture, society, and core values.

Throughout the course, students explored topics such as:

  • Fundamental values of Latvian and European Union, their meaning and real-life application;
  • Latvian values – nature, culture, language, family, human dignity, and others;
  • National systems and everyday life – education system, employment opportunities, housing market, public transport, leisure activities;
  • Latvian history and culture – Song and Dance Festival, traditional cuisine, mythology, customs, and religious diversity.

In the practical part of the course, students attended a theatre performance, took part in a discussion with representatives of the One-Stop Agency at the Society Integration Centre, and participated in Easter celebrations at the Latvian Ethnographic Open-Air Museum. There, they enjoyed traditional activities such as egg rolling, swinging rituals, and explored ancient Latvian customs.

These activities not only promote knowledge acquisition but also foster mutual understanding between international students and local residents. The course supports the development of practical skills needed for daily life in Latvia and creates a valuable platform for intercultural dialogue.

The project "Getting to Know Latvia" is implemented within the framework of the Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund by NGO “Sadarbības platforma”, co-financed by the European Union. Grant Agreement No. PMIF/13.3./2023/1/01.
